I was born in Istanbul, Turkey, during an era of violent chaos and a military coup in which thousands of people, mostly intellectuals, were imprisoned for their ideas concerning social justice. Growing up in this politically and ideologically charged environment kept me close to the threat of death and in tune with what was going on around me, influencing and inspiring my work. It was never easy for me to express my feelings through words, partly due to my female identity, but also due to the strict leadership and undercurrent of political Islam in the developing country in which I was raised.

The possibility of sudden loss, the brutality of people’s approach to their surroundings and society’s aggressiveness urge me to create. Exploring the continuous struggle and the eternal order of our universe, I use multiples and repetition to undermine hierarchical relations between objects. The work resonates as a theatrical extension of daily life, where a viewer becomes performer, reminding us that we all have social roles to fulfill. Simplicity is pivotal for what I intend: I like the work to be open to different interpretations, given all diverse qualities of each viewer. If the results are disturbing, it is because life itself is, in general, disturbing.

Proposal for Twice A Stranger:

40 Days and 40 Nights

For Twice A Stranger, I would like to create an installation of photographs, videos and documents as well as objects. 40 days and 40 nights was inspired by my fasting for the last two years. In January 2008 I decided not to drink a single drop of alcohol for 40 days. In January  2009 I fasted and did not consume sugar for forty days. I will document myself living the lives of forty different people coming from different backgrounds for forty days (one person each day). By doing so I hope to bring awareness to the struggles and experiences of various cultures in Istanbul.
